How to Clean a Plastic Water Tank Without Scratching It: Tools, Algae, Replacement

Polyethylene tanks are the most common type on Saudi rooftops because they are light, they never rust and they go in quickly. The trade-off is a softer inner surface than concrete or steel. Any scratch left by the wrong cleaning method becomes a foothold for bacteria and algae the next time, so the way you clean matters as much as how often you do it.
This guide explains how to clean a plastic water tank properly, why green algae keep returning in a sunny climate, and the signs that tell you a tank should be replaced rather than scrubbed again.
How is cleaning a plastic water tank different from other tanks?
In a concrete tank, firm scrubbing removes the dirty film without harming the wall much. In polyethylene, deep scratches stay and accumulate. USA Tank's published maintenance guidance for poly tanks therefore recommends a soft-bristle brush with a mild detergent solution or a mix of water and white vinegar, and it warns that harsh chemicals, solvents and abrasive cleaners can damage the material.
| Item | Use | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Scrubbing tool | Soft brush, non-scratch sponge, long-handled mop | Wire brush, steel wool, sharp scraper |
| Cleaner | Mild detergent, or water with white vinegar | Solvents, petrol, thinner, abrasive powders |
| Disinfectant | Diluted unscented chlorine, dose calculated | Mixing chlorine with other cleaners, or pouring it neat on the wall |
| Rinsing | Ordinary hose, or pressure washer on a low setting | High pressure concentrated on one close spot |
| Limescale | Diluted vinegar, gentle scrubbing, then rinse | Strong acids, or scraping scale with a metal tool |
A tank used for drinking water should also be made from a material approved for contact with potable water. The NSF/ANSI 61 standard, for example, covers the health effects of components in drinking-water systems, tanks included. Any cleaner residue left on the wall undermines that, which is why the tank is rinsed thoroughly after every stage.
What are the safe steps for cleaning a plastic water tank?
- 1
Empty the tank and isolate the supply
Close the inlet valve and drain the water through the outlet valve to a point connected to the sewer.
- 2
Remove loose sediment
Lift sand and silt off the floor with a sponge or a wet vacuum with a plastic nozzle before any scrubbing, so the grains do not turn into an abrasive.
- 3
Scrub with a soft brush and mild detergent
Work from top to bottom and pay special attention to the waterline, the corners and the area under the manhole.
- 4
Rinse at low pressure
If you use a pressure washer, choose the low setting, keep the nozzle well away from the wall and keep it moving.
- 5
Disinfect with diluted chlorine
The dose is calculated from the tank capacity. Dissolve any powder outside the tank first so no concentrated granules settle on the plastic floor.
- 6
Drain, rinse and refill
After the contact time, drain the solution and rinse well before use, then refit the lid and seal it firmly.
Because most plastic tanks sit on the roof, the drain layout and float valve are covered in our guide to rooftop tank cleaning, and the exact chlorine dose is worked out in how to disinfect a water tank with chlorine.
Why does green algae grow in a plastic tank, and how do you stop it?
Algae need light, water and nutrients. A light-coloured or partly translucent plastic tank lets sunlight pass through its wall, so a green film appears on the side facing the sun. USA Tank's guidance states that keeping light out of the tank is the main form of prevention, whether by choosing an opaque tank or by covering vent openings with fine mesh.
Saudi Arabia has clear skies for most of the year, so algae appear quickly in tanks that get many hours of direct sun. Cleaning removes them for a while, but they return if the source of light is not dealt with. Practical fixes include:
- Shade the tank with a canopy or screen that blocks direct sun without trapping heat around it.
- Replace a translucent or thin-walled tank with an opaque one at the first opportunity.
- Seal the lid and close any gap that lets in light and dust.
- Wrap the tank in an insulating layer, which is what tank insulation offers to protect the water from both heat and light.
Which mistakes damage a plastic tank while you clean it?
Most plastic tanks are not worn out by use. They are damaged by the way they are cleaned or handled on the roof. These mistakes are common and easy to avoid:
- Standing inside the tank or leaning on the rim of the opening. Polyethylene walls are not designed to carry a person's weight, and the neck of the opening can deform or crack.
- Pouring chlorine powder straight onto the empty floor, where it stays concentrated in one spot and leaves a mark or a pale patch.
- Using bathroom cleaners or strong degreasers because they shine faster. They are not made for drinking-water surfaces.
- Leaving the tank empty and open in the sun for hours after cleaning, which heats the wall and lets dust back in.
- Refitting the lid carelessly or leaving it crooked, so light and insects return the same day.
- Over-tightening fittings and valves afterwards, which can split the plastic outlet neck.
The general rule is that anything that leaves a scratch, a chemical trace or mechanical stress on the body shortens the tank's life. Cleaning plastic properly is a little slower than cleaning concrete, but it keeps the surface smooth, which makes it harder for biofilm to cling.
When is replacing a plastic tank better than cleaning it?
Cleaning cannot save a damaged tank. The same maintenance guidance recommends checking for bulging, warping or distortion, running a hand over accessible surfaces to feel roughness and cracks, and dealing at once with deep scratches or splits. It also says a good tank that is well maintained can last twenty years or more, although harsh conditions shorten that.
| What you notice while cleaning | Suggested decision |
|---|---|
| Dirt, algae and silt with no damage to the body | Clean and disinfect, and fix the cause of the light |
| Light surface scratches | Clean with gentle scrubbing and keep watching |
| Bulging or leaning tank wall | Replace, because the body can no longer take the water pressure |
| Fine crack that weeps water | Usually replace, since a local weld rarely lasts in a drinking-water tank |
| Brittle surface that crumbles under the hand | Replace at once, a sign of advanced sun damage |
| Chalky outer layer with heavy fading | Inspect the wall carefully and plan a replacement |
If you notice water around the base of the tank or damp patches on the ceiling of the top floor, the leak may come from a fitting or valve rather than the tank body. Leak detection helps before you decide to replace. If you prefer the cleaning done by a team that knows the limits of plastic, you can book tank cleaning and disinfection.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use chlorine to clean a plastic water tank?
Yes. Diluted, unscented chlorine is suitable for disinfecting polyethylene tanks as long as the dose is calculated from the tank capacity and any powder is dissolved outside the tank first. The key is never to leave it concentrated on the floor, and to rinse the tank thoroughly after the contact time before you use the water.
Is a pressure washer safe on a plastic tank?
It is safe on a low setting if you keep the nozzle at a distance from the wall and keep it moving. High pressure concentrated on one spot can scratch the inner surface or weaken a thin area, especially in older tanks affected by sun. If you doubt the condition of the wall, use an ordinary hose instead.
Why does my tank turn green again a few weeks after cleaning?
Because the cause is still there: sunlight passing through a light or partly translucent wall, or a lid that does not seal. Cleaning removes the algae, but preventing them means shading the tank, replacing it with an opaque one or wrapping it in an insulating layer that blocks light.
How long does a plastic water tank last in Saudi Arabia?
Some manufacturers' guidance says a good polyethylene tank with maintenance can serve twenty years or more, but strong sun shortens that. Regular checks for fading, a chalky layer, brittleness and bulging are what decide the real lifespan of your tank.
Does vinegar remove scale from a plastic water tank?
Diluted white vinegar is a gentle option named in maintenance guidance for polyethylene tanks, and it helps soften light limescale. Scrub with a soft brush and rinse well. Do not use strong acids or metal scrapers. If marks remain, repeat the process rather than increasing the concentration.
