Unit 1: Mechanical Equipment and Instruments in Insulation Work
Professional insulation equipment falls into four groups: heated 1:1 proportioners for polyurea and foam, impingement-mix spray guns, surface preparation machines such as grinders, shot blasters and water jetting units, and QA/QC tools for moisture, thickness, continuity and adhesion. Results depend on setting pressure and temperature per the manufacturer's manual and on disciplined daily maintenance.

Safety in insulation work rests on five pillars: a supplied-air respirator, chemical suit and resistant gloves when spraying isocyanates; an entry permit and atmospheric testing in the order oxygen, flammables, toxics inside tanks; a hot work permit with a fire watch; fall protection on roofs; and compliance with the summer midday outdoor work ban.

A standard field operating procedure is a written sequence of steps and inspection hold points for each insulation system: crack injection, crystalline slurry, torch-applied bituminous membranes, and spray foam or polyurea. Its value is that it prevents skipping critical steps such as surface preparation or moist curing, and makes acceptance depend on documented measurements rather than impressions.

To diagnose an insulation defect, start with the symptom and ask whether the cause is the substrate, the material and mix ratio, the weather, or the application. Most blistering, delamination and slow cure trace back to substrate moisture, an off-ratio mix or an exceeded recoat window. The lasting fix is removing the defective layer, not coating over it.
