Wasp and Hornet Nest Removal: Why You Should Not Do It Yourself and When a Sting Is an Emergency

Why is removing a wasp or hornet nest yourself dangerous?

A wasp passing you in the garden rarely attacks. A nest is another matter. The University of California Integrated Pest Management programme states that social wasps defend their colonies vigorously, and that defensive behaviour increases as the season progresses, the colony grows and food becomes scarce.

The same source explains that, unlike honey bees, wasps do not have a barbed stinger that pulls off after stinging, so they can sting repeatedly. Hitting a nest with a stick, spraying it from close range or burning it can therefore end in dozens of stings within seconds. Wasp and hornet nest removal needs planning and equipment, not courage.

Where do wasps and hornets build nests around the house?

Knowing where the nest is decides how it should be handled. The University of California programme states that yellowjackets nest in abandoned rodent burrows and cavities in the ground, and in voids inside walls and ceilings, while paper wasps hang their nests under roof edges, in attics and under tree branches.

Common nest locations and their level of risk
Nest locationLikely typeWhy it is dangerousWhat to do
Under a roof edge or awningPaper waspsClose to doors and seating areasKeep people away and call a professional
Inside a void in a wall or ceilingYellowjacketsThe nest is hidden and its size cannot be judged from outsideDo not tamper with the entrance; call a professional
In a burrow or cavity in the groundYellowjacketsIt may be stepped on or mown over suddenlyMark the spot and keep children away
On a tree or shrub in the gardenPaper waspsLower risk if it is away from walkwaysLeave it, or have it removed professionally depending on how close it is

What should you do until the professional arrives?

Before removal

  • Keep children and pets away from the area around the nest
  • Do not shake the nest, throw stones at it or spray it with water
  • Never use fire, petrol or any flammable material
  • Close windows and doors near the nest
  • Cover food and sweet drinks in outdoor seating areas
  • Anyone with a known sting allergy should stay well away

The University of California programme recommends keeping food, including pet food, covered or indoors, and covering soft drink cans outdoors so a wasp does not crawl inside. A sting inside the mouth or throat is far more dangerous than a sting on the hand.

How is wasp and hornet nest removal done professionally?

The University of California programme states that if a wasp nest has to be destroyed, the easiest and safest option is to ask a professional for help. During treatment, protective clothing covering the whole body is worn with a mesh face veil and gloves, and nests are treated at night when the wasps are inside.

  1. 1

    Daytime inspection from a distance

The technician identifies the type of wasp, the location and entrance of the nest, its approximate size and whether it sits inside a wall void.

  2. 2

    Preparing the site

The household and close neighbours are informed, windows are closed, and children and animals are kept away.

  3. 3

    Night treatment with full equipment

In full protective clothing, using a registered product according to its label, at the time when the colony is inside the nest.

  4. 4

    Removing the nest once safe

The nest is removed only after activity has been confirmed to have stopped, and the area is then cleaned.

  5. 5

    Dealing with the cause

Once activity has ended, cracks and openings in walls and edges are sealed, and whatever attracts wasps, such as exposed food and waste, is reviewed.

Through our pest control service, Azl coordinates the work with trained technicians and registered products, with a written report of the treatment and re-entry times. Whichever provider you choose, verify their qualifications through the Balady platform as explained in how to check that a pest control company is licensed.

When is a wasp sting an emergency?

The University of California programme states that severe allergy to insect stings affects one or two people in a thousand, and that anaphylactic shock shows as dizziness, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing or a swollen throat, and can begin immediately or within 30 minutes. It also warns that multiple stings are dangerous even for people without allergies and can affect the kidneys days later.

Classifying a sting and what to do

Ordinary stingPain, redness and local swellingWash with soap and water and apply cold compresses, as the Ministry of Health advises
Reaction that needs a doctorSwelling spreading to other areas, or nauseaGo to the emergency department
Allergic shockDifficulty breathing, dizziness, swollen face or throat, loss of consciousnessCall 997 or 911 immediately and use the prescribed epinephrine injector if there is one
Multiple stingsA large number of stings, especially to a childEmergency care immediately, even without allergy symptoms
Sting in the mouth or neckSwelling that may obstruct breathingEmergency care immediately

For first aid after stings, the Saudi Ministry of Health advises washing the area with soap and water, applying cold compresses to reduce swelling, not pressing or scratching the area, and going to the emergency department if swelling spreads or breathing difficulty, nausea or dizziness appear. The University of California programme adds that anyone who knows they are allergic should carry a prescribed epinephrine injector when exposed to stinging insects.

How do you prevent new nests from being built?

Inspect roof edges, awnings and wall openings at the start of the warm season, when nests are still small. Seal openings and cracks in facades once you are sure they are empty, and cover waste and food in outdoor seating areas. The University of California programme notes that bait traps are placed on the edges of the area to be protected, not in the middle of it.

Surfaces and edges that attract wasps are often pigeon sites as well, so see pigeon control on air conditioners and roofs. If nests are in an istiraha among stones and timber, the same spot may shelter scorpions, so read scorpion control around the home. To protect children during any treatment, see pesticide safety with children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a wasp nest myself?

It is not advisable. The University of California programme says a professional is the easiest and safest route, and that treatment is done at night in full protective clothing with a mask and gloves. Wasps defend the nest fiercely and can sting repeatedly, and anyone with a sting allergy must not go near it at all.

Do wasp traps work in the garden?

The University of California programme states that bait traps and water traps reduce the number of foraging wasps, and that they are placed on the edges of the area to be protected, not in the middle. They do not eliminate an existing nest near an entrance or window, which needs professional night treatment in protective equipment.

When is a wasp sting an emergency?

When there is difficulty breathing, dizziness, loss of consciousness or swelling of the face and throat, which are signs of allergic shock that can appear within 30 minutes according to the University of California programme. Multiple stings and stings in the mouth or neck also count. Call the Saudi Red Crescent on 997 or 911 immediately.

Does a wasp sting only once like a honey bee?

No. The University of California programme explains that wasps have no barbed stinger like honey bees, so they can sting repeatedly while defending the nest. That is why approaching a nest is far more dangerous than meeting a single wasp in the garden, and why professionals use full protective clothing.

What is the first aid for an ordinary wasp sting?

The Ministry of Health advises washing the sting site with soap and water, applying cold compresses to reduce swelling, and not pressing or scratching the area. Watch the person afterwards, and go to the emergency department if swelling spreads or nausea, dizziness or difficulty breathing appear.
