Foundation & Footing Waterproofing

Foundation waterproofing covers footings, ground beams and below-grade walls with bituminous coatings or membranes to protect them from soil moisture, salts and groundwater that corrode reinforcement. It is done during construction before backfilling and is one of the most important steps for the building's lifespan.

Is foundation waterproofing necessary?

Yes, especially in cities with high groundwater or saline soil. Its cost is small compared with repairing corroded reinforcement later.

How many coats of bitumen do footings need?

At least two coats after primer with full coverage are usually recommended; in highly saline or groundwater areas a membrane is preferred. The supervising engineer sets the final specification.
